Here again Escher is having fun with presenting a two dimensional image as if it were three dimensional. He exaggerates the center of the image, that includes the balcony, thrusting it out as if Escher had punched it from behind, dramatically magnifying the balcony. However, despite his efforts, the image remains as flat as the paper on which it is drawn.
